Description
This proof quarter eagle pattern from 1868 features an experimental design for the gold $2.50 denomination. The quarter eagle was the smallest standard gold coin in regular production, and its pattern program during the Reconstruction era explored potential improvements to the established Liberty Head design. Gold patterns required careful accounting due to the intrinsic value of the metal, and each specimen represents a significant material investment by the Mint. The quarter eagle's design would remain essentially unchanged until the Indian Head quarter eagle of 1908 revolutionized American coin design with its incuse format.
