Description
This proof half dime pattern from 1868 features an experimental design for the Seated Liberty half dime in what would prove to be one of its final years of pattern production. The half dime was becoming increasingly obsolete as the nickel five-cent piece dominated small transactions, and the denomination's days were numbered. Despite this, the Mint continued to produce experimental varieties, exploring alternative designs that might save the denomination or testing concepts applicable to other coins. The delicate silver planchet and diminutive size make half dime patterns particularly challenging to strike with full detail.
