Description
A second proof dime pattern for 1868, continuing the extensive experimental program for the ten-cent denomination. The proliferation of dime varieties in 1868 contrasts with the more modest programs of 1866 and 1867, which produced only two and three dime varieties respectively. This surge in experimentation may reflect a growing consensus within the Mint that the Seated Liberty design needed updating, with J-641 representing one of many alternative concepts being evaluated for the small silver denomination.
