Description
A misplaced date and a die gouge are both visible on this 1868 Indian Head cent. A misplaced date occurs when date digits are initially punched into an unintended area of the die. A die gouge is a raised mark caused by damage to the die surface. In this case, the misplaced date is visible above the "68" in the date, and a die gouge runs through the shield and right wreath on the reverse. This variety is cataloged as FS-302 (misplaced date) and FS-901 (die gouge), Snow-13. The 1868 Indian Head cent had a mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces, continuing the lower-mintage trend of the late 1860s.
