Description
This is the doubled die obverse of the 1867 Two Cent Piece. The obverse design was impressed into the working die in two slightly different positions, so the die itself carries a doubled image and every coin struck from it shows the same doubling in the same place. The displacement is consistent in direction across the affected elements, and both images are fully formed and rounded. That is what distinguishes a true doubled die from machine doubling, which happens during the strike and leaves a flat shelf with no serifs. Any mintage given below counts the entire issue for this date and mint, not this variety: a variety comes from one die or a few, and how many coins they struck was never separately recorded. The 1867 Two Cent Piece - Doubled Die Obverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Two Cent Pieces 1864-1873 collection. The obverse features a shield with a banner inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST — the first U.S. coin to bear this motto and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing 2 CENTS. How many coins carry this variety is unknown, and any figure for the 1867 Two Cent Piece counts the whole issue rather than this variety. The denomination was increasingly redundant. Struck in bronze, weighing 6.22 grams, 23 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #3594.
