Description

The third and final three dollar gold pattern for 1867, this proof specimen concludes the experimental program for the denomination that year. Three dollar patterns are among the more challenging Reconstruction-era patterns to locate because the denomination's low mintage figures extended to its pattern production as well. The gold content of each pattern piece represented substantial value even at the time of striking, limiting production runs to the minimum necessary for evaluation purposes. The three dollar piece would continue in production through 1889 before being abolished along with other obsolete denominations.

Rarity Notes

R.7 to R.8. Very rare, estimated 4-7 examples extant.
