Description

A second proof three dollar gold pattern for 1867, featuring die characteristics distinct from J-596. The three dollar denomination occupied a unique niche in American coinage that was increasingly difficult to justify commercially, and these patterns explored design modifications intended to extend the coin's useful life in commerce. Longacre's Indian Princess design with its feathered crown remained the standard for the denomination, and patterns from this period document potential refinements to this well-known motif. The wreath reverse of the three dollar piece provided space for both the denomination and design elements.
