Description

This proof three dollar gold pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for one of the most unusual denominations in the American series. The three dollar piece had been introduced in 1854 primarily to facilitate the purchase of three-cent stamps in bulk, and its Indian Princess design by James B. Longacre gave it a distinctive appearance among gold coins. By 1867, the denomination was declining in commercial relevance but continued to be produced in modest quantities. This pattern explores design possibilities for the three dollar coin during the Reconstruction period, when the entire monetary system was under review.
