Description
A second proof three-cent pattern variety for 1867, this piece represents continued experimentation with the nickel three-cent design. The denomination had only been in production for two years when this pattern was struck, making its design still relatively fresh and subject to potential modification. Chief Engraver Longacre's Liberty Head obverse on the regular three-cent nickel featured a more classically styled portrait than his Indian Head cent, and the pattern program explored variations on this theme. The Roman numeral III reverse within a wreath provided ample space for design experimentation even on this diminutive coin.
