Description
The third and final three-cent pattern variety for 1867, this proof piece completes a modest series of experimental strikes for the denomination. The nickel three-cent coin would continue in production through 1889, outlasting both the two-cent piece and the silver three-cent trime that it had been designed to replace. These 1867 patterns document the Mint's ongoing evaluation of the young denomination during a period of intense monetary experimentation driven by the aftermath of the Civil War and the challenges of resuming specie payments. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition would remain unchanged throughout the denomination's existence.
