Coin Details
Description
This proof three-cent pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for the nickel three-cent denomination that had been introduced in 1865. The three-cent nickel was one of the newer coins in the American series, and its pattern program in 1867 explored potential modifications to the Liberty Head obverse and Roman numeral III reverse designed by Longacre. These experiments tested alternative portrait styles, wreath arrangements, or metallic compositions for the small-denomination coin. The three-cent nickel served an important role in Reconstruction-era commerce by facilitating the purchase of three-cent postage stamps.
