1867 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-578a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A compositional variant of J-578, this proof pattern was struck on an alternative planchet type as indicated by its "a" suffix designation. These suffix varieties are particularly valuable for understanding the Mint's metallurgical experimentation alongside its design testing. The copper-nickel alloy used for Shield nickels presented unique challenges compared to the softer bronze and silver compositions used for other denominations, and the Mint continued exploring alternative formulations even after settling on the standard 75/25 ratio.
Rarity Notes
