Description
The third and final dime pattern cataloged for 1867, this proof striking completes a short series of experimental varieties for the ten-cent denomination. While the bulk of 1867 pattern production focused on the Shield nickel, the Mint maintained active pattern programs for other denominations as well. The dime patterns from this year document the ongoing evaluation of Seated Liberty design elements during a period when the entire American coinage system was being reconsidered in light of post-Civil War monetary policy changes. The silver dime would continue in its basic Seated Liberty form through 1891.
