Description

This proof dime pattern from 1867 explores design modifications for the Seated Liberty dime during the Reconstruction period. The dime remained an important denomination despite competition from the new nickel five-cent piece, and the Mint continued to test potential improvements to its venerable Seated Liberty design. J-587 may feature the IN GOD WE TRUST motto or alternative design elements that were under consideration for the ten-cent denomination. Christian Gobrecht's original Seated Liberty design had been in use since 1837, and by 1867 the Mint was beginning to contemplate a more comprehensive design overhaul that would eventually materialize in the 1870s and 1880s.
