Description
A second proof dime pattern for 1867, featuring a die variety or compositional difference that distinguishes it from J-587. The Seated Liberty dime's compact size presented challenges for integrating the IN GOD WE TRUST motto that Congress had mandated for coins of sufficient dimension. The 1867 dime patterns explored various approaches to fitting the motto into the existing design framework without overcrowding the small coin's limited surface area. The regular-issue Seated Liberty dime would not receive the motto until 1860, having been among the first denominations to adopt it.
