Description
This proof pattern showcases a proposed design modification for the three-cent nickel piece, which had entered circulation only one year earlier in 1865. The three-cent nickel was authorized alongside the Shield Nickel as part of the Mint's broader effort to introduce base-metal coinage for small transactions during and after the Civil War, when silver coins had disappeared from circulation due to hoarding. The obverse displays the Liberty Head portrait used on the regular-issue three-cent nickel, while the reverse features the Roman numeral III within a wreath. Longacre's design for this small denomination balanced simplicity with elegance, and this 1866 pattern explores potential refinements to the design in its second year. The proof format reveals fine details in the hair and wreath that regular strikes cannot fully convey.
