The 1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-507 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It pairs the regular 1866 shield obverse with a reverse without rays; USPatterns.com believes this was the first reverse die of the 1867 type, with the stars above CENTS pointing between the letters. Judd lists it in nickel with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-7. Judd classes it as an essai, a trial of a proposed design. USPatterns.com estimates about two dozen in nickel.
