The 1866 Nickel Pattern - J-517 is a five-cent pattern struck outside the Mint from Mint dies, as USPatterns.com believes, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It pairs a Washington obverse with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with the regular reverse without rays used from 1867. Judd lists it in copper with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-7. USPatterns.com ties these pieces to dies Joseph Mickley bought from the Mint as scrap; many of them went into the Crosby collection. USPatterns.com confirms four. It is catalogued as Judd-517, Pollock-544.
