Description

Another supplementary catalog addition to the 1866 Shield Nickel pattern series, J-A1866-9 was identified after the primary Judd numbering was established. The high supplementary number (A1866-9 rather than A1866-2 or -3) indicates that multiple previously unrecognized varieties have been identified for 1866, further expanding an already vast series. This pattern may represent a composition or die variant that was sufficiently similar to an existing cataloged variety to escape initial identification, only to be distinguished through later analysis. The continued discovery of new varieties in this series demonstrates that the 1866 nickel pattern program was even more extensive than originally understood.
