Description

This proof pattern tests the Shield Nickel design in a composition from the later range of the 1866 experimental series. The sheer number of alloy variants — over sixty from J-473 to J-533 alone — made this denomination's pattern series the most extensive metallic study in American Mint history up to that point. The testing program drew on the expertise of Mint Assayer William DuBois and his laboratory staff, who analyzed each composition for purity, hardness, malleability, and corrosion resistance. Their scientific approach reflected the professionalization of the Mint that had accelerated during the Civil War, when wartime coinage demands had forced modernization of production methods and quality controls.
