The 1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-494 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It pairs the second shield obverse, with a small motto and a split date with the "Short 5" reverse. Judd lists it in nickel with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-8. Judd classes it as an essai, a trial of a proposed design. The only listing USPatterns.com found is a lot in a July 1939 sale.
