Description
The 1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-488 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse carries a portrait of Abraham Lincoln; USPatterns.com calls it the only Lincoln head pattern the Mint made. Judd lists it in bronze with a plain edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-7. Judd classes it as an essai, a trial of a proposed design. It is catalogued as Judd-488, Pollock-576, Adams-Woodin 583, Taxay EP457. Cataloged as PCGS #60684.
