Description

Nearing the final form of the Shield Nickel design, J-471 represents a late-stage experimental variety in the pre-adoption testing series. By this point in the sequence, the basic elements of the design were established — the Union shield obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST on a banner above and crossed arrows behind, paired with a reverse featuring the large numeral 5 within a circle of thirteen stars. The variations between J-467 and J-472 may involve fine adjustments to letter sizing, device spacing, or the precise contour of the shield's edges. Such refinements, while subtle, were critical for ensuring that dies could produce hundreds of thousands of coins before requiring replacement — a practical concern that influenced many design decisions at the Mint.
