Description
Continuing the early shield design development series, J-469 presents another experimental configuration of the five-cent shield motif. The reverse of the shield nickel underwent particularly intense experimentation — the question of how to display the denomination was debated at length, with options including a simple numeral 5, the numeral within a circle of stars, and the numeral surrounded by rays emanating between stars. The "with rays" reverse that was ultimately adopted proved visually striking but mechanically problematic, as the intricate ray design caused accelerated die wear. This challenge would lead to the rays' removal in 1867, but at this stage of development, the full range of reverse options was still under active consideration.
