Description

This proof pattern from the pre-Shield design exploration series features an experimental obverse that was one of several candidates considered and rejected before the Shield design won approval. The reverse may display a wreath, numeral, or other arrangement that differs from the adopted stars-and-rays configuration. By the time the Mint had worked through this sequence of die trials, the field of candidates was narrowing — practical considerations like die durability, striking ease, and visual distinctiveness at pocket-worn conditions all factored into the final selection alongside purely aesthetic judgments. The five-cent nickel needed to be immediately distinguishable from other denominations in both size and appearance, and each rejected design taught the Mint something about what would and would not work.
