Description

Retained cuds form when a die cracks at the rim and the broken fragment stays connected to the die body rather than separating, producing a raised, bulging area on every coin struck from that compromised die. RCD-1c-1866-01 is the first documented retained cud for the 1866 Indian Head cent, cataloged by the Cuds on Coins attribution service using their standard nomenclature: RCD for retained cud, 1c for the one-cent denomination, 1866 for the date, and 01 indicating the first example identified. James B. Longacre designed the Indian Head cent obverse, featuring Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress, paired with a reverse displaying a laurel wreath (1860-1909 variety with shield added in 1860). Philadelphia struck approximately 9.83 million Indian Head cents in 1866, the first post-Civil War year when mintage volumes began recovering from the wartime hoarding that had driven copper-nickel cents out of general circulation in the East. The 1866 date also carries the added interest of being among the first Indian Head cents struck after the Mint transitioned to the bronze alloy composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) introduced in 1864, though this composition had been in use for two years by 1866. Retained cuds on copper and bronze cents from this era often display distinctive toning patterns, as the retained fragment's slightly displaced surface oxidizes differently than the surrounding normally struck rim. The retained cud records a moment of die crisis — the die has cracked severely enough to compromise its rim structure, yet production continued with the damaged die, creating a finite number of coins bearing this specific failure signature before the die was eventually retired or broke completely. Collectors should look for an irregularly raised area along the rim where the normal design and lettering appear distorted or partially obscured by the bulging die fragment.
