Description

Part of the early experimental series for the new five-cent denomination, this proof pattern features one of several non-Shield head designs tested before the Shield Nickel was adopted. The obverse presents a Liberty portrait distinct from both the Washington Head of J-461 and the Shield design of J-473 onward, representing one of Longacre's alternative proposals for the new coin. The reverse carries the five-cent denomination in an arrangement that differs from the eventually adopted numeral-and-stars format. Multiple obverse and reverse die combinations were tested in rapid succession during 1866 as the Mint raced to prepare the new denomination authorized by Congress. Each surviving example provides a snapshot of a design concept that was considered, evaluated, and ultimately set aside in favor of the boldly symbolic Shield design.
