Description
The 1865 Three Cent Pattern - J-414 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a three-cent piece in the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. It is a striking of the regular 1865 nickel three-cent dies in an off metal; USPatterns believes most such pieces of this year were struck for sale to collectors rather than to test the dies. One tested oroide piece was about 89% copper, 5.8% zinc and 5.2% tin. It is struck in oroide with a plain edge; USPatterns rates it R-7. Catalogued as Judd-414, Pollock-485, A/W 516. Cataloged as PCGS #70595.
