1865 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-412
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-412, Pollock-483, is an aluminum striking of the 1865 Nickel Three Cent Piece using the regular production dies. The aluminum composition makes this pattern extraordinarily lightweight compared to both the copper-nickel production coins and the copper die trials. Aluminum was a prestige metal during the 1860s, and the Philadelphia Mint explored its potential across a wide range of denominations during this period. The piece exhibits the standard three-cent nickel design with Liberty wearing a coronet on the obverse and the Roman numeral III set within a laurel wreath on the reverse. Aluminum patterns from 1865 are rare across all denominations, and the three-cent examples are no exception. The metal's susceptibility to environmental degradation means that surviving specimens may show signs of oxidation or surface pitting.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-8 or higher. Only 2-3 specimens known. Valued around $8,500 when available. Among the rarest of the 1865 three-cent patterns.
