Description

Judd-413, Pollock-484, is a regular dies trial piece struck in copper with a plain edge. A majority of J-413 patterns are from the same obverse die used to strike regular proof 1865 three cent nickel pieces, identified by prominent repunching on the date. A second variety exists showing no repunching on the date, establishing that at least two obverse dies were used. The repunched date is a significant diagnostic feature, as it links these copper trials directly to the proof production dies used for the regular nickel three-cent coinage. J-413 carries a Rarity-5 designation, making it substantially more common than most 1865 off-metal patterns, with approximately 31 to 75 specimens surviving. This higher population indicates that a significant number were produced specifically for distribution to pattern collectors.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-5 (R-5). Relatively available compared to other 1865 patterns, with 31-75 estimated survivors. Values in the $2,000-$4,500 range. Two obverse die varieties documented.
