Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-445, Pollock-513, is the first of four 1865 proof half eagle With Motto patterns (J-445 through J-448). These patterns extend the motto program to the five-dollar gold denomination, which had received limited pattern attention in previous years (J-271-J-272 in 1860 and J-283 in 1861). The obverse features the Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht, while the reverse adds the motto to the heraldic eagle. Struck in copper as a substitute for gold.
