Description

Two rim cuds are visible on the reverse of this 1865 Indian Head cent (Fancy 5 variety). A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. In this case, two separate cuds appear on the reverse, one to the left and one to the right of 12 o'clock. The 1865 Fancy 5 variety features a tall, ornate "5" in the date with distinctive serifs, distinguishing it from the Plain 5 variety with its shorter, simpler digit.
