Description

Judd-378, Pollock-449, is the first of three 1864 proof half dime patterns testing the With Motto design. The Seated Liberty half dime's tiny planchet made motto incorporation the most challenging of all denominations, yet the Mint persisted in testing the concept across all silver issues. The obverse retains the standard Seated Liberty design while the reverse adds the motto to the wreath-and-denomination arrangement. These patterns extend the half dime motto work begun with J-323 and J-324 in 1863.
