Description
Judd-397, Pollock-468, is the second 1864 proof dollar motto pattern. This variety tests an alternative motto arrangement on the dollar's spacious reverse. The silver dollar was not actively circulating in 1864 — paper currency had replaced it in commerce — but the Mint maintained the denomination and continued developing its design. The dollar's role as the highest-value silver coin made the motto's appearance on this denomination symbolically important, even if the coins were primarily produced for export and collector purposes.
