Description
Judd-353, Pollock-423, in proof format is a carefully struck presentation piece using the same die combination as the business-strike J-353. The proof version exhibits fully mirrored fields and sharply defined devices, showcasing every detail of the Indian Head design including the fine "L" initial on the ribbon below the headdress. This proof striking documents the transitional 1864 cent design in its finest possible state, allowing direct comparison with both the outgoing copper-nickel composition and the incoming bronze alloy. Proof 1864 cent patterns were distributed to favored collectors and Mint officials.
