Description
Judd-355 is a business-strike cent pattern from 1864 struck in copper-nickel, the composition being phased out that year. This pattern represents one of the last copper-nickel cent experiments, as the new bronze formula had been approved by Congress in April. The continued production of copper-nickel patterns alongside bronze patterns during 1864 may reflect the transition period when both compositions were available and the Mint was completing its evaluation program. Varieties with "b" suffix (J-355b) exist in different compositions.
