Description
Judd-356b is the second compositional variant of J-356, representing the third alloy tested with this die combination. This comprehensive three-metal approach to a single design indicates J-356 was considered one of the more promising 1864 cent configurations. The variant may be struck in aluminum, which was an exotic and expensive metal in 1864 but was being seriously evaluated for coinage applications at the Philadelphia Mint.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7 to R-8. The rarest of the J-356 variants. Estimated 3-5 specimens known.
