Description
Judd-356a is the first compositional variant of J-356, struck in an alternative alloy while sharing the same die combination. This off-metal version provides comparison data for the J-356 design in a different planchet material. The 1864 cent pattern series tested an unusually wide range of compositions as the Mint finalized its decision on the new cent alloy, with bronze, copper, copper-nickel, nickel, and aluminum all under consideration.
