Description

Judd-352, Pollock-402, completes the 1863 proof eagle pattern series. This variety presents an alternative With Motto design for the ten-dollar denomination, offering a different arrangement from J-349 through J-351. The four 1863 eagle patterns collectively demonstrate that the Mint extended its motto experimentation to gold coinage during this year, going beyond the silver denominations that had been the primary focus of the 1861-1862 programs. The eagle denomination would eventually receive the adopted IN GOD WE TRUST motto in 1866, completing the cross-denominational implementation.
