Description
Judd-345, Pollock-397, is the first of four 1863 proof dollar patterns testing the With Motto design on the Seated Liberty silver dollar. The dollar denomination had not been produced for regular circulation since 1803, but proof and pattern strikings continued throughout the 19th century. This pattern adds the motto to the dollar's reverse, which features a larger field than any other silver denomination and therefore could accommodate the additional text most comfortably. The Seated Liberty dollar reverse, with its bold heraldic eagle, provided an imposing canvas for the motto.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7. Approximately 5-10 specimens known. Dollar-denomination patterns are scarcer than half dollar or quarter patterns.
