Description

Judd-304, Pollock-356, is the final distinct 1863 cent pattern variety, completing the series that runs from J-299 through J-304. This proof striking represents the culmination of the year's cent experimentation program. By the end of 1863, the Mint had assembled sufficient data from these pattern trials to make a definitive recommendation to Congress regarding the future of the cent denomination. The recommendation would result in the Coinage Act of 1864, which authorized both the bronze cent and the new two-cent piece. This pattern thus represents one of the last steps in the experimental process before the legislative decision was made.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-7. Approximately 5-8 specimens known. Among the scarcer 1863 cent patterns.
