Description

Judd-231 is a proof pattern cent struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, representing another die combination in the extensive series of 1859 Indian Head cent patterns. The obverse features Longacre's Indian Head Liberty design with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1859. The reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination ONE CENT, with subtle differences in wreath composition and arrangement from other 1859 cent patterns. This Judd number represents one of the scarcer varieties in the 1859 cent pattern series, as it was produced in limited quantities compared to the prolific J-228 transitional pattern. The various wreath configurations tested in 1859 (J-226 through J-231) demonstrate the thoroughness with which Mint Director Snowden and Chief Engraver Longacre evaluated potential reverse designs before settling on the oak wreath with shield motif adopted in 1860.
