Description
Judd-226 is a proof pattern cent struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, featuring James B. Longacre's Indian Head obverse paired with a reverse displaying a laurel wreath enclosing ONE CENT with a bundle of arrows behind the wreath. The obverse shows Liberty wearing a feathered headdress with LIBERTY on the headband, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border, and the date 1859 below. This pattern represents one of the experimental reverse designs considered during the 1859 redesign of the Indian Head cent's reverse. The laurel wreath with arrows reverse differs from both the adopted 1859 laurel wreath (without arrows) and the 1860 oak wreath with shield design. Longacre prepared multiple wreath variations for Mint Director James Ross Snowden to evaluate, and J-226 represents one of the rejected alternatives. Examples are scarce but appear at auction periodically.
