Description

Judd-230 is a proof pattern cent struck in copper with a plain edge, featuring the 1859 Indian Head obverse combined with an oak wreath reverse enclosing ONE CENT. Unlike the copper-nickel strikings that dominate the 1859 cent pattern series, J-230 was struck in pure copper, giving it a distinctly different color and appearance. The obverse displays Longacre's Liberty wearing a feathered headdress with LIBERTY on the headband. The copper composition indicates this pattern was produced to test how the new design would appear in a different metal, or as an off-metal striking for collector distribution. Copper strikings of 1859 Indian Head cent patterns are considerably rarer than their copper-nickel counterparts, as the Mint struck far fewer examples in this metal. The coin has a diameter of 19mm, consistent with the standard cent specifications of the period.
