Description

Judd-229 in proof format is a pattern cent struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, featuring the 1859 Indian Head obverse paired with an oak wreath reverse enclosing the denomination ONE CENT. This proof striking differs from the business-strike version of J-229 in its mirror-like fields and sharp, frosted design elements characteristic of proof production. The obverse displays Longacre's Indian Head Liberty with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1859. The reverse wreath configuration represents one of the intermediate designs tested between the 1859 laurel wreath and the adopted 1860 oak wreath with shield. J-229 proof strikings are moderately scarce and represent the careful, presentation-quality versions of this transitional design that were produced for Mint cabinet sets and collector distribution.
