Description

This variant, cataloged as Judd-174a, belongs to the same die family as J-174 but was struck on a planchet of different alloy composition. Like its companion, the obverse presents the Flying Eagle design with thirteen stars and the date 1855, while the reverse shows ONE CENT within a wreath surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, all with a plain edge. The alternate alloy composition of J-174a further demonstrates the systematic nature of the Mint's metallic experiments during this period. By producing identical die pairings across a range of metals, Mint officials could directly compare how different compositions performed in terms of striking quality, visual appearance, and resistance to wear. This methodical approach would ultimately lead to the copper-nickel formulation chosen for the issued Flying Eagle cents beginning in 1856. The J-174a remains rare and is sought by specialists assembling comprehensive collections of the pre-small-cent experimental issues.
