Description
Judd-167, Pollock-193, rated R.5. A later restrike of the 1855 hook-neck flying eagle cent pattern, produced from the same dies as the original J-167 to meet collector demand. The design is unchanged: the flying eagle obverse with its distinctive slanting 5s in the date, surrounded by thirteen stars, paired with the ONE CENT denomination within a thick Coronet-style laurel wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge at the large cent diameter. Restrike production occurred during the 1860s or 1870s, consistent with the well-documented practice at the Philadelphia Mint of running additional impressions from retained pattern dies. Distinguishing restrikes from originals requires careful examination of die state — later strikings may show evidence of die deterioration, surface pitting, or other signs of aging that accumulated during the interval between production runs.
