1855 Proof Cent Pattern - J-167a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-167a, Pollock-193. This variant of the J-167 flying eagle cent pattern is struck in an alternative alloy rather than the copper used for the standard J-167. The obverse and reverse designs are identical — the hook-neck eagle with slanting 5s in the date on the obverse, and the thick Coronet-style laurel wreath enclosing ONE CENT on the reverse — but the different metal composition gives this piece a distinct appearance and feel. Struck with a plain edge, the piece measures 27.5mm in diameter and weighs approximately 10.89 grams, matching the large cent format. The use of yet another alloy from these same dies underscores the thoroughness of the Mint's testing program: once satisfactory dies were on hand, multiple compositions could be evaluated quickly and inexpensively. The exact alloy is not precisely documented in all references, but it differs from the straight copper of the J-167.
