Description

Designated Judd-173 (Pollock-198) and rated Low R.7, this pattern continues the large-format Flying Eagle cent experiments in yet another metallic composition. The obverse presents the hooked-neck eagle design surrounded by stars with the date below, while the reverse features the smaller wreath variant with ONE CENT at center, matching the die pairing of J-172. What distinguishes J-173 is its bronze composition, differentiating it from the copper J-172 struck from the same dies. The Mint systematically produced these patterns in multiple alloys to evaluate their suitability for mass production, visual appeal, and durability in circulation. Both originals and restrikes are known for this variety, though as specialists have noted, examples exhibiting any significant original red color are extremely rare across the entire run of 1855 Flying Eagle patterns. The plain edge is consistent with other pieces in this experimental series. At Low R.7, fewer specimens survive than the copper counterpart.
