Description
Rated R.8 and exceptionally rare, this variant is cataloged as Judd-170a. The obverse presents the Flying Eagle motif with thirteen surrounding stars and the date 1855 below, featuring the slanted 5s characteristic of this year's patterns. The eagle displays the elongated, curved neck that distinguishes it from later iterations of the design, closely following the Gobrecht/Peale prototype originally conceived for silver dollars. The reverse mirrors the large cent format with ONE CENT centered within a wreath and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border. The planchet size falls between the old large cent and the forthcoming small cent, reflecting the Mint's transitional experiments in both size and composition. This particular striking was produced on a planchet of different alloy than the standard J-170, contributing to its extreme rarity. The plain edge is consistent with other patterns in this experimental series. At R.8, this is among the rarest of the 1855 Flying Eagle cent pattern varieties.
